Building a school for the north-shore community of St. Helene
In September 2009, a teacher in Roatán gave us a tour of her school and mentioned in passing that she hoped to one day help build a school for the island she was from because they didn?t have one. That got our attention, and by March, 2010 after touring the island and speaking with several of the locals, we committed to building them a 3-room schoolhouse by rainy season (end of September, 2010).
Top S.H.E.L.F. presents us with several challenges. The first comes with the community's "buy-in". Before we committed to build a school, they had to agree to clean up their property of trash?and keep it clean. A tall order for an island with no trash service ? but one we believe will help pull the community together and both teach and model respect to the youth as they grow up.
Second, St. Helene is an island off the island of Roatán, so all materials need to be shipped by boat which is not only expensive, but potentially dangerous without someone intimately familiar with the reefs in the area.
Last of all, there is no running water or electricity on the island. Large, open windows have been designed as a result to allow as much natural light and ventilation as possible.
