Project - Roatán, Honduras - Majken Broby Children's Home

Located in Roatán, a small island off the coast of Honduras in Central America, the Majken Broby Children’s Home was established in 1981 and named after the late Ms. Majken Broby, a Swiss national, who was instrumental in getting the home founded.

At full capacity, the home can house up to 25 children at a time and is usually close to full. The children come from homes on the island in which the parents are deceased or unable to care for them physically, financially, or emotionally. The home itself is functional, but run down, and often lacks supplies for the basic needs of the children.

Adjacent to the home, a trade school is also being constructed to benefit the children of the home and other under-privileged youth on the island. It is critical for the long-term benefit and well-being of these children to not only get an education and know English, but to learn a viable trade. There is currently no such trade school on the island.

Both the Majken Broby Children’s Home and the adjoining trade school are operated by the Association of Baptist Churches, but largely rely upon the generosity of tourists visiting the island and two other known philanthropic organizations who help.

Although the home and school need time and money for improvements, what the kids need most is the consistent love and attention from people who care. Knowing that they matter to someone helps build their self worth and confidence, which impacts their future in a powerful and meaningful way.

We frequent the island every 2-3 months and spend our personal time and money helping with the physical needs of the children and meeting with board members of the home to identify larger projects. But more importantly, we spend time with the kids getting to know them and their unique personalities and giftedness and building trusting relationships. It is our desire over time to help these children with the emotional and spiritual healing needed as a result of abuse, neglect and abandonment.

The Abundant Life Foundation will enlist community support and help provide for the immediate requirements of the children at the home in such areas as food, clothing, toiletries, school tuition, and school supplies. We will also partner together in larger scale, long-term projects to benefit the home and help with the trade school to give the children opportunity and a future. Together we will demonstrate that these children do matter and that they are greatly loved.
